I used to use AIM all the time...it sustained a long term relationship from '98-'00 (before everyone had cell phones so calls were still long distance). After college I basically stopped, but now I use Facebook chat a little. Basically my friends and I aren't on the computer at the same time as much so IM doesn't really help.

I actually expect people to send me messages when I'm Away/Idle, and to realize I won't reply until I get back. I treat IM as something of an answering machine; in fact, my away messages used to specify that people should leave a message.

I use Trillian, but I've been thinking of switching to Pidgin because Trillian had been crashing almost once a day for months, and tech support is pretty non-existant for free users.
