TV recommendation: Swingtown

Swingtown, I can say after watching 3 episodes, has got me hooked. I've watched the pilot 4 times, the 2nd episode 3 times, and the 3rd episode twice -- and it's not getting old. I highly recommend the show, if you have a chance to watch it. Episodes are available on iTunes, and you can stream the most recent episode (Ep 3) from the CBS website.

I couldn't believe this show was on a broadcast network. I still have trouble with believing it. It's sexy and real and no one is perfect. The CineKink website/blog recommends writing CBS to keep religious action groups from getting the show pulled off the air. I wonder how effective that is (although I did send a letter to my local CBS affiliate and to CBS HQ). I'm wondering if writing the show's sponsors in support would be more effective.

The show may be "about" swinging in the 1970's, but it's well written, well acted, and well directed. It's just a good show, and the problem with "good shows" that tackle issues is that no one ever talks about how good the show is. They just talk about their position on the issue. This isn't a show about poly people in the 2000's. It's a historical drama about jealousy, trust, friendship and all those other good human things -- and how bad people are at handling them.

Edit to Add: In Eps 1-3, it's very, very, very, very heterocentric. As I discussed with Evil Ganome this morning, the out gay culture was an important cultural part of 1970's America, and I don't expect to see it addressed, sadly. Still, I can hold out hope. Even with no queers, the show is still good.

I only just now noted your reply to my comment that Swingtown bored me...which was
"what did you think of "Six Feet Under" and "Big Love"? I know you're vaguely uncomfortable with polyamory and bisexuality (and possibly short guys with blue hair *wink*) but I don't know much about your TV preferences. Did you find it boring because you didn't relate to the characters, or cause you don't much like dramas?"

I don't have cable, so I've not ever seen Six Feet Under or Big Love. It wasn't the subject matter of Swingtown that bothered me...it just felt...boring. It didn't grab me in the least. The characters felt flat to me and it seemed like the action was very, very slow.

As to what tv I like...cable shows I've seen outside of cable, I liked Queer as Folk, The L Word, and Dexter. I like some sitcoms...How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, and Big Bang are my current favorites. I own the entire series of Friends on dvd. I was a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and X-Files too.

Much of my tv preference revolve around whether I'm attracted to one or more characters...I watch Law and Order SVU for that reason. Maybe if I found anyone on Swingtown remotely attractive I'd like the show more. I actually was looking forward to seeing the show and was pretty disappointed when I finally saw it.

I haven't seen "Queer as Folk", "the L word", or "Dexter".

I've seen a couple episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and A Half Men", but none of "Big Bang".

I liked a couple seasons of the "X files" and I've only seen a couple episodes of "Buffy"

Also:

"Olivia Benson" = hot, but Mariska Hargitay isn't as much. I feel the same way about "Corky" in Bound vs. Gina Gershon in any other role.

It's a very good point...Bensen is much hotty than Hargitay. I feel the same way about Dana Scully vs Gillian Anderson. I saw Gillian Anderson on a talk show once and she was a total air head.

Anyway...it's really B.D. Wong that you're after, eh?

Oh...hated Bound too.

I find B.D. Wong hot *and* find Dr. George Huang hot. That's the difference.

And I don't know what to say if you found "Bound" boring. except that you probably don't want to take my recommendations on anything else.
